There are lots of shared
resume formats in internet. You can get lots of contents by using Google Search
or other search engines and input [ Resume Templates ] or other similar key
words. However, I would like to share some other kind of idea in resume development
, and hope could also have your feedback here:
1. Besides
your personal information, the main purpose of your resume is to introduce your
professional work capability and potentials to job providers in wordings, thus,
it is to explain your value can meet
the firms current need and /or possible future demand.
2. Regarding
work achievements and things significant, use straightforward description and
list in an orderly way, and be precise and concise to describe your work
achievements in number [ Intensity,
amount, volume, speed etc.]. It also
means you achieved your work #KPI, or, exceeded expectation!

Product Manager in LinkedIn, those who work in similar role may need this,

3. It
is suggested not to stating demerit, negative or confidential information about
persons or things happened at previous workplace in your resume. Because, talents
searchers may have concern about what you will say in resume once you leave
this company due to something you feel unhappy at work.
4. Please
be advised not to use serial number( e.g. 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 ) in editing your
work, experience or achievements. Below shows my related experience:
I
used to use serial number in editing my resume, there was a talent hunting
consultant, A, she told me, this may tell resume readers that I am a rigid
person because 1, 2, 3 seems a work step instruction, and the format is also
not aesthetic; however, it is more properly we use number in description in
/for steps, thesis development, notice or announcement and things for
interaction purpose( like this post), resume is a kind of document similar to
personal promotion purpose, it is not suitable to use this way.
However, it is very
interesting, after I reorganized my resume, one day, there was a consultant B,
recommending my profile to a work opportunity but failed, and finally I heard
it through the grapevine it was because the Chairman dislike candidates stating
work achievements in the way of 1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2……….it was B did it for me.
Sad!
5. Attach
1 page[Professional
Work Background Summary]. This helps resume readers
know your professional work ability more quickly. Consider add it in the 1st
page or right after personal information page, more than that, Those most
relevant to the required work skill or experience of the job should be listed
first. Also concisely add your work specialty or experience though it is less
relevant, it is not only to show your added value but to avoid less focus on
the applied work area and not to be seen as unprofessional of core competent.
Please also be reminded that
it is possible your listed work achievements would directly be taken as[
Work Objectives]by resume readers but you’re
not necessarily to get interview opportunity. In my experience:
Many
years ago, I applied for a Head of Business
Transformation-APAC role of a US based listed firm, and its reporting
line is C.O.O; I admired this company, and I’ve already followed this C.O.O’s
in Linkedin, and I’m very confident my work skill and experience match its work
requirements. However, coincidentally, right after I received the resume viewed
notice, I found this C.O.O’s post in Linkedin, saying he will lead a specific work objective and
define it as the first work priority to ensure business transformation work
success, and that work objective,
the wording, was completely the same
as my related work skill listed in resume, and finally I was not
invited to its interview due to some unknown reason.
My
conclusion: sometimes, work experience is like the ancestral secret recipe of
brewing soy sauce, and it is impossible for outsiders to know; above C.O.O’s
behavior reflected his copy-and-paste my wording as his own idea, I disagree
this kind of behavior and work attitude, and in this overall situation, I hope
his announcement could say that work objective was a work decision [made
by the company], though,
this also not describing the truth, either, it was not him creating that
idea by himself. At that moment, I realized, having no opportunity spending
time with this kind of interviewer is fortune, furthermore, in some aspects, it
means, I was already a C.O.O level like him, he helped me to know more about
myself. Thank him anyway.
6. Under
the company name, use smaller font to describe their major products or industry
they belongs, emphasis on their business strength( eg. Leader in this industry,
most sizable firm, listed or the first one to go public etc.). It not only
shows you agree with this company, but you are committed to your work, and
excellent talents come from outstanding firms. You may apply for jobs need your
overseas relocation, however, your current work company may be not so famous in
that country, and by doing so, this makes your resume readers now your
background more efficiently.
7. Between[company
name]and
the last[work
title]you
held, which to list in the upper side, I got two opposite suggestion. Hence, I
prefer the resume builders to decide the way they prefer, or, seek for other
career consultants’ advice.
8.
Add
a brief description in your career gap if it is
3 months or longer. Because, you will possibly lose an interview opportunity
due to a longer career gap with no
reason listed in resume, the resume readers’ curiosity is not answered;
it is better to reduce the chance that others guess the reason on it or guess
in the wrong way of the blank, and to explain
the detailed reason in interview. In your unemployment period, please
do not forget to improve your work skill or expand knowledge to enrich your
life. Meanwhile, do not allow unemployment affect your mind negatively and
reduce your awareness of your own value.
Below
is the stories you or your friends may need:
A.I
have a friend, a computer programing engineer, who has been unemployed for
years; in his resume, he listed below description in his career gap in year
2010 to 2015:
2010 ~ 2015 Starting up an
internet company, studying sideline program.
Above
starting up an internet company means he became a member of outsource job
website, doing contract works. His studying sideline program means he was doing
house works and taking care of his baby together with his wife, and he was also
telling the situation in interview, and saying he will do these in his
retirement life. He also took the initiative sharing interesting things
happened in his job searching, doing part-time job and housework, including his
consideration for terminating the contract works before go on board in the
future (non-compete terms ) . He deliberately focused on sharing his
professional logical mindset, and the capability in dealing with pressure
caused from urgent work deadline and family care, etc., hoping to lift up his
interview favorability.
Currently,
he is employed in a company now. Below shows his job search experience and the
change of his thoughts:
Focusing
on the outcome we want to have, do not guess what talent searcher would think,
because, we never know what others’
idea would be: in the beginning, in his
point of view, the longer period of unemployment, the much more difficult to
get a job, the company side will consider this kind of candidates must have
some issue causing them has not get hired yet, and no one would like to know
their work capability. In the fourth year of his unemployment, someday, he got
an unsuccessful interview notice again, he felt no surprise but he realized
that even he has been unemployed for 4 years, there was still companies would
like to meet him, and before the interview, he think he will not be hired, and
the whole situation and his forecast( not getting interview invitation) and
expectation( want to be hired) were totally happened in the opposite way. He
decided to completely change his job-seeking mentality, try his best in job
searching but not expecting anything negatively before getting the interview
result.
In
his idea:I
want to be a person who would like to hire me. Establish my confidence, revise
my resume, practice interview Q&A, and self-exam the interview but don’t think too much. Do what I need to do
on that day and move forward.
B.
2021/12/29, in Linkedin, an engineer person who was just work for Airbnb for 1
year shared his interview experience with company at 2020/12 and now he is in
the Tech Lead role professionally. In the beginning, he worried his 1 year
career gap will be considered as disqualified, however, the recruiter asked his
work interest in other work opportunities. He appreciated Airbnb much and
reminded us not to let career gap become the burden in our mind, and if the
company is right for you, they will help you to achieve your career success.
What's
your idea about this?
9. About
leave reason, if you have more than 5 times change your jobs, I suggest you
only show your last 3 time leave reason in your resume. This suggestion is for
resume length control purpose, and consider the information value based on the
timing it occurred; and it is no harm if you prefer to remark all of them,
however, your wording must be in peaceful tone.
E.g.
I left a company because there is work integrity issue in my managers work
behavior, and I cannot control them; I listed [company culture issue],
and sometimes, the interviewers may worry I may be a person who cannot quickly
fit in new work culture, I appreciate them asking me this kind of question
directly and I told them the real issue and legal concern if I list the truth
in my resume, and after realizing the cause, the company became less focusing
on their worry.
10. If your work reference
persons have these kind of situation below, it is advised you list in the
resume and it may have positive effect in your job search.
A. They are all high level
superiors or influential persons in the industry you work for.
All
my work reference persons are VP, CEO and Chairman work level persons, I list
their work title and companies’ name in the personal information page in my
resume, I hope to show my work contribution is recognized in the companies I
worked for. I’ve discussed this idea with 2 talent hunting consultants and they
both think this is feasible in resume development.
B.All are former managers.
To
list their companies’ name, work title and work relationship between you and
the listed persons. This is to deliver an image that this job applicant has
good work relationship with their managers, and it is expected to have higher
possibility to get hiring manager’s interview opportunities.
C. Co-working
managers, peers and team members.
To
list company name, reference persons’ work title and your work relationship and
reporting line and project name in personal information page. It shows your
communication work skill and team player work attitude and management work
capability.
